  51. Forget it is right. I've got a contract wiring in a new radio station
  52. studio (KKIQ in Walnut Creek CA) that's gotta be on the air on Thursday;
  53. they just laid carpet on Friday. We're working 9AM til midnight every
  54. day til done, so you won't be hearing much from me until another week
  55. passes.

  57. Please see the article on the proposed "Telecommunications Act of 1991".
  58. It's a bad deal for everyone except the RBOCs (Regional Bell Operating
  59. Companies). Write letters to the Usual Suspects who claim to represent
  60. us. Ask 'em what they are doing about it. Ask them for a copy of the
  61. legislation (did you know they're are REQUIRED to do legislative
  62. searches FOR YOU FOR FREE upon request. So request!)

  64. (Obviously the foregoing is of interest to us U.S.ers mainly... if you
  65. don't know about the U.S. phone system, well, it's a long story... it's
  66. in theory "private" not gov't, and it was "deregulated" ("unleashed" is
  67. more like it) and it's a war of euphemistic bloodsuckery from here on
  68. in... guess who's blood.)

  92. I would like you to distribute this to the people on the fidonet, either
  93. through your newsletter, or an independant mailing.  Many people have
  94. heard the advertising from the baby-bells voicing their opposition to
  95. this bill, and somebody has to set the record straight as to what the
  96. truth is (in why they oppose the bill)...  The passage of this bill is
  97. crucial.  Please give this the widest distribution possible, with the
  98. recommendation that the readers call AND write their congressman with
  99. support for this bill, as the RBOCs (* RBOC == Regional Bell Operating
  100. Companies -- tomj *) are asking people to do (in opposition) of the
  101. bill.

  103. With the recent federal court and supreme court decisions allowing the
  104. bells into the information services marketplace, this bill is the only
  105. thing standing in their way of making an information services monopoly.
  106. Please read the bill, and I'm sure you will agree with me.

  108. Everybody with a modem should read this, as it may effect their future,
  109. and even the future of BBSs and the FidoNet.

  119. Telecommunications Act of 1991.

  121.  If this bill does not pass, the Regional Bell Operating Companies
  122. (RBOCs) will be able to force all other information services out of
  123. business.

  125.  Please TELL your Congressman and Senators, and all members of the

  129.  involved committees to vote YES on this bill.

  131.  The RBOCs have been conducting a massive disinformation campaign on the
  132. radio bashing the sponsers of this bill and saying that if this bill
  133. passes, that the public will not be able to use online information
  134. services leaving the impression on the listener that they are the ONLY
  135. ones that can provide these services.
  136.  
  137.  This bill will also provide for open competition among phone companies
  138. at    the local level.  This is the second reason that the RBOCs oppose
  139. this    bill.
  140.  
  141.  The following information is from the SW Bell brochure on the subject :
  142.  
  143.       "IT SOUNDS EXCITING
  144.  
  145.            The exciting news is that we already have the
  146.            technology to put these services to work for us
  147.            through the seven regional holding companies --
  148.            Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth, NYNEX,
  149.            Pacific Telesis Group, Southwestern Bell Corpora-
  150.            tion, and U.S. West.  Some larger businesses in
  151.            urban areas already use a variety of information
  152.            services.  But, they are not an option for most
  153.            small businesses and the general public.
  154.  
  155.            That's because making the services available to
  156.            everyone depends on the regional holding companies...."

  158.  Information services depend on cables and switching facilities owned
  159. and
  160.  operated by the RBOCs.  Having them in the industry is a massive
  161. conflict
  162.  of interest.

  207. The proposed changes are signifigant; they're hacking the Comm. act of
  208. 34, some rather basic changes. While it's worded in positive terms
  209. ("improve quality of service" and all that rot) the "quality" will be
  210. enhanced for the providers (RBOCs) not us! -- tomj *)

  218. Boys and girls of the Fido Network, we might have a bit of a problem,
  219. and it's a problem that, if apathy can be broken, is easilly placed
  220. out of our need to worry about.
  221.  
  222. After requesting listings of files available on several FidoNet systems
  223. both locally to mine and among sites around the United States, I find
  224. that we still have -- many of us -- software packages that have not
  225. been placed into the public domain yet are nonetheless still available
  226. for public download. The so-called dirty dozen list of pirated software
  227. packages is being ignored. I was shocked to find that my very own system
  228. had two pirated packages that a little effort on my part uncovered.
  229.  
  230. Remember back around 1982 when a package by Sega was being distributed
  231. around the network? A hacked package that said, upon power-up, that it
  232. was a Public Domain package yet was none of that and was placed onto
  233. the dirty dozen list. A total bummer because it was such a cool game
  234. that I probably have a copy around here, somewhere, even though it's a
  235. pirated package and I've gone through my floppies looking for pirated
  236. stuff.

  241. I have cleaned my Fidos' house if only to protect my ass.
  242.  
  243. To perhaps half of the systems that I found still to cary known pirated
  244. software package, I sent a note along with some historical comments
  245. about the package they had available. In all cases, however, no note
  246. or comment was returned. After a week or two, after downloading the
  247. files listings again, the majority still had known pirated materials
  248. available for download. Some _had_ removed some of the software.
  249.  
  250. That's understandable, of course. There is no cause for a sysop these
  251. days to believe anything someone says yet it creates a problem for the
  252. Fido Network: an opening for the telephone concerns to further attack
  253. our public networks while they impose upon us business rates. If all
  254. the opposistion must do is request our file listings and mark those
  255. that are pirated, any court will find us boys and girls to be anything
  256. _but_ a lawfull collection of computer nerds.
  257.  
  258. And then there is another method of attack that we should guard against.
  259. So many christians, out of a love for their jesus, would have us remove
  260. the pronographic materials from our systems upon pain of lawsuit if
  261. their holy and untried children were ever to be caught panting over a
  262. GIF file displayed on their screens.
  263.  
  264. There are three things that I did to protect myself that FidoNet SysOps
  265. used to do yet seem to have walked away from a little bit. It's a sound
  266. sequence of protection, I think:
  267.  
  268.     o Uploads to a file directory that may not be downloaded from
  269.       until it's evaluated by the SysOp and then moved to a public
  270.       area where it may be accessed. It's too easy to plant evidence
  271.       onto our systems and then download it for use against us.
  272.  
  273.     o Evaluation of software packages currently existing on the
  274.       SysOps system every now and then for pirated materials. It
  275.       shouldn't be needed very often unless information about a
  276.       software package comes to light
  277.  
  278.     o Validation of all Users (hack-spit) ages before they are
  279.       granted access to certain GIF files. With a suitable comment
  280.       that the files depict sexual activities and should be
  281.       considered art or something.
  282.  
  283. We must, FidoNet, clean up our act otherwise the commercial mail systems
  284. that provide end-user to end-user mail services will end us for sure. We
  285. are in the way and they'll move heaven and earth to remove _us_.
